Staff Psychological Services Clinic - Introduction

Background

The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health states (Meltzer et al., 2008) that the percentage of healthcare professionals who suffer from depression, anxiety, and drug abuse are higher compared to other industries, resulting in decreases in work performance. To mitigate this problem, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the UK Department of Health have recommended healthcare organisations to offer psychological support and counselling services to their staff.

Misson

The Staff Psychological Services Clinic was founded in 1996 to provide professional psychological assessments, diagnosis and treatments for Hospital Authority (HA) staff who may be experiencing emotional and psychological distress.

Clients

  • HA staff who may be experiencing emotional and psychological distress
  • The service is provided to HA staff only due to limited resources, with the exception of providing the service to their family members in the case of critical incidents.

Service Scope

Under the supervision of CCPS, Clinical Psychologists at the Head Office and Cluster Staff Psychological Services Clinics provide the following services:

1.Clinical Services
  • Psychological Assessments and Diagnosis: Diagnosis is done via psychological evaluations and face-to-face interviews.
  • Individual Counselling: Through various counselling methods, staff can understand the causes of their psychological distress and implement solutions.
  • Psychotherapy/Psychoeducational Group: Counselling is more effective when paired with group psychotherapeutic sessions. Sessions allow those who have encountered similar problems to learn from and support each other.
2.Self Help Psychological Wellness Website
  • The website contains discussions on various topics surrounding mental health for HA staff
  • The website includes:
    1.  ‘Test Station’ - Questionnaires to gauge your mental health and screen for possible symptoms
    2. ‘Psycho-resources' - Information on insomnia, mood disorders, stress management and so on
    3. ‘Journey to the Positive Psychology Island’ – A learning journey on positive psychology

3.Consulting Service for Managerial Staff
  • Professional consultation sessions are available for staff in managerial and supervisory positions to help them respond to staff enquiries.

Referral

  • Referrals are not necessary. HA staff are welcome to schedule face-to-face interviews at their convenience.
